For anyone who might've been watching American Idol 4 years ago, you would've remembered Sanjaya from Season 6. He auditioned with his sister Shyamali, who did not make it to the finals like he did. As much as he was panned by some people, he certainly had the talent.
If he didn't have that talent, he wouldn't have made it past the initial audition, much less make it to the final ten. There shouldn't even be a question about that. His voice was just not strong enough for some of the songs he sang. That, coupled with poor choice of songs for his vocal range at the time and inexperience on a big stage, overshadowed his true talent. But fortunately (or maybe unfortunately, depending on how you want to look at it), people remembered him because he had such wild hairstyles for each performance.
Sanjaya Malakar - 4 years later
But as you can see, the past four years have been good for Sanjaya. He's made appearances on TV (Hell's Kitchen, The Soup (G4) as well as an off-Broadway show. Despite a throng of haters who swore he had no talent, he seems to have come out of the Idol experience with a positive outlook.
As the article says, he wants to stay Indie. Let's see how he does in the next few years. Best of luck to him!
